Which wilderness areas in the U.S. have the most abundant resources for survival?

This has been cooking my noodle for about a week now. I am thinking that the wilderness areas in the Pacific Northwest is the best, but have not looked, or lived near other WAs.

Our family's requirements would be:
  • Naturally renewing water source such as a stream or non stagnant lake
  • Lots of edible plants and herbs
  • Maybe an access river
  • Heavily forested
  • Fins, feathers, and fur quarry
  • Not too extreme on the winter
  • Usable timber for fire and shelter that can be harvested by a single man

I will probably think of more stuff as this thread progresses.

You may have noticed the day of the mountain man is over...and the sodbusters won......

You'd be better off, IMHO, with a plot of good farmland and get to practicing "5 acres and Independence"

The "land barons" have returned though. Banks around here will not loan to the "unwashed masses" on bare land, and we don't have the 5-20 thousand an acre to buy it outright. Any time a good deal emerges, the greedy, deep pocket Realtors are all over it like vultures.

I already live there, and the Californicated money grubbers beat me to the land.

Cheap land is gone forever...

Twenty acres for 42k ain't a bad price, Mac.....especially considering the power is already in place I take it.

IF you have water, or the area is know for well depth pretty much, that's a bargain compared to most of the country.

Some of the lots are cut up crappy ( #30-35 for example).....you'd have to buy two or three to assure some privacy, but the more 'square' pcs, and at the end of the road, would be my choice. I'd also be a little concerned about the "wildlife refuge" deal.....there might be more restrictions on the property that I could live with....but if 'developed' property is going for that, I would think there would be raw land even cheaper.

Here's some more cons...

BTW: They "hold" your timber and mineral rights.

That is high for the area. Also water drilling can cost more than the property is worth out here.

Although the Northwest is beatiful and mostly free of mosquitoes and snakes, the areas around the Appalachians and the Ozarks are not only less expensive but much better suited for growing crops and orchards as they have much more rainfall. Hardwoods are better suited for heating homes, springs and creeks are much more abundant, there is less chance of catastrophic fire and the winters are milder.

Take a good look at Southern Missouri and Eastern/Northern Tennessee The Californians have not discovered them yet.

I'll probably end up in the Northwest anyway.

Nah.....don't think I'd be buying there.....it's either mine to do pretty much as I please, or it isn't. Starting to sound a lot like big parcels with an HOA....what a nightmare.

I'm not sure what you mean by wilderness, but my brother just bought four long acres on a little ridge, filled with red cedar and oak, overlooking 11 Mile river with a shack, water well, electric, and frontage on a year round 30 foot wide stream for $20,000. In Arkansas.
The shack even came with some nice big juicy rats, at no extra charge.

I tend to agree with Hoarder.....though right IN this area, land has gotten ridiculous of late, you can go a bit northwest or onto the Cumberland Plateau and land gets back to much more reasonable. I paid 1000/ac for mine back in 1982 when I bought it......and even 12 years later, I added an adjoining 27 acres for about the same, if you subtract the improvements....but now, even rough, raw mtn land, like mine was, is going for 5-6k/ac.

"Untouched by civilization, all of the creatures of Nine Mile Ranch roam about freely and fearlessly, protected by law and by the people who live there."

Sounds like you can't hunt there, but probably plenty of good hunting nearby!

I live in Oregon (although in the city) and the PNW is truly abundant. It's the reason the native Americans here were able to develop such a rich and advanced culture--plenty of bounty made living pretty easy, compared to, say, the Plains Indians. But, that was then, this is now! I hope to, at the very least, bug out to land in central or eastern Oregon in the near future, and hopefully further than that--like to Montana. We'll see. Damned Willamette Valley in Oregon (Portland, Salem, Eugene) is full of freakin' socialists, and they're the ones that carry the elections for the whole damn state!

I need enough space to see 'em coming from at least 300 yards in all directions (wink).

Some things that may have been missed......

1. How close are military bases?

2. Where is the nearest large city?

3.What is the political mindset of the general poulation? ..this is important as when i did my research before i booked out west, i found 3 states had a definite GET THE **** AWAY FROM ME AND LEAVE ME ALONE attitude toward the government! a far cry from the helpless dependent sheep in the midwest.

I came pretty close here....10k people in the county and i can go 100 miles and not see a paved road.
